A beginner’s guide to ISO standards for shipping containers

If you’ve been considering purchasing a shipping container of your own, for business logistics or to convert into a container conversion, you might well have heard of ISO standards.

While ISO standards can feel inherently complex, especially if you don’t know much about them, the team at Gap Containers can reveal all!

So, keep reading to find out everything you need to know about ISO standards.

What are the ISO standards governing container specifications?

ISO standards are internationally recognised specifications that cover how to consistently and efficiently carry out tasks, manage processes and develop individual services or products.

This ensures high standards are met efficiently across the globe and prioritises safety.

For shipping containers, the key ISO standards include:

    ISO 668

This covers the dimensions and ratings of ISO containers, including internal and external measurements, container weights, and door mechanisms.

Failure to comply with these tolerances can make the lifting, stacking, and transporting of containers impossible, as well as impact how easy it is to fill them and what weight of goods they can hold.

    ISO 6346

ISO 6346 covers the coding, identification, and marking of shipping containers – meaning there will be a unique identifier for each container. It looks something like this:

    CSQU3054383a

As you might expect, this makes them easier to identify and track. Each ISO 6346 compliant number contains:

    • The owner code (CSQ) – usually 3 letters long and is registered with the French Bureau International des Containers (BIC) to ensure it is unique.
    • Category identifier (U) – to identify the type of equipment, it will be followed by only one of the following Latin capital letters:
      • U – for all freight containers
      • J – detachable freight container-related equipment
      • Z – for trailers and chassis
    • Serial number (305438) – this 6-digit serial code uniquely identifies the container with the owner/operator’s fleet.

Check digit (3) – this final single digit is used to verify the accuracy of the container identification number. It uses a formula specified in the standard.

    ISO 1161

The specifications for corner fittings are outlined within this standard.

These are crucial for securing containers, ensuring loads can be accommodated, and enabling compatibility during transportation.

    ISO 3874

This standard outlines best practices for handling and securing containers, including lifting, stacking, and securing them for transportation.

It covers all container types, including standard, open-top, or cube containers, with instructions for each.

    ISO 1496

Defining the specifications and testing requirements for freight containers, this standard ensures their strength and suitability for international transport.

This applies to all container types, including standard container types, thermal, and open-top containers.

    ISO 830

Essentially, a glossary or brief dictionary for shipping containers, as outlined by the ISO.

This ensures all users can communicate clearly and understand the container types, parts, and any related concepts.

How are containers identified and tracked globally?

To ensure they can be tracked and collected easily when they arrive at their end destination, all shipping containers have a unique ISO identifier, similar to a number plate on a car or lorry.

As each identifier is a one-off, even if they are owned by the same company, countries, transport experts, and docking staff across the globe can understand and log them as they are moved from one destination to another.

There might also be added modern tracking technology, like GPS and barcodes, that also help companies keep track of containers, but this is decided by the owners and transport companies themselves.

Do all shipping containers have an ISO identification number?

If they are being used as part of the logistics and transport network, freight containers will need an ISO identifier as well as other key markers, including a Container Safety Convention (CSC) plate.

Surprisingly, if you are purchasing a retired shipping container to use as part of a container conversion, or even just for storage, it will still need an ISO identification number to help track, manage, and maintain containers throughout their lifecycle.

They likely won’t need a CSC plate, however.
