What have you missed most over the last 12 months? Perhaps eating out at your favourite restaurant? Heading to your local pub? Or maybe you’re longing for a night at the theatre?
The arts sector has certainly been hit hard by the pandemic. Theatres in both London’s West End and New York’s Broadway have been closed since March 2020 – having a devastating financial impact on the industry – and the thought of seeing a musical is now a long distant memory.
But earlier this month, leading architecture firm – Marvel – came up with a solution…
COVID-secure open-air theatres that are constructed from shipping containers.
Shipping container theatres planned for Broadway
This is a truly innovative concept; and another fantastic example of how these steel boxes can be used to create an impressive and practical building – and tackle at least some of the effects of COVID-19.
Marvel has proposed converting a 40ft shipping container into an outdoor theatre, which could be bridged between two scaffolding towers raised above street level. During the day, cars and pedestrians would be able to pass below the bridged theatre unimpeded. But on a night, the road could be closed off, allowing an audience to sit – socially distanced – in front of the stage.
If necessary, additional platforms could then be added in front of the container to extend the performance space and LED screens could be placed inside to form a digital backdrop.
As shipping containers are ready-made structures, these container theatres could – in theory – be constructed in just 1-2 weeks. And with indoor venues expected to remain shut until much later this year, they offer a viable way for productions to re-start (and get back on track) during the pandemic.
If there’s interest in this container conversion project, Marvel has said it could quickly test out the design near Broadway. And who knows; if it’s a roaring success, the idea may wing it’s way to the West End – and we may get to see our favourite musicals a little earlier than anticipated. Just outside, sat on the street, looking up at a shipping container.
Container conversions at Gap Containers
Here at Gap, we’re always excited to hear about a new ingenious use for shipping containers. And this latest proposal really caught our eye and made us eager to start a project of our own.
We’re certainly not world-leading architects like Marvel. But we do sell high-quality new and used shipping containers, which would make the perfect building blocks for such a project. What’s more, we’re also UK leading specialists in container conversions and can assist in making a wide range of container-based structures – whether that be a pop-up theatre, a shop, bar, restaurant, office…
So, if you’re feeling inspired by these container theatres (as much as we are!), why not get in touch?
