The Solution for a Crisis: Container Conversions Offer New Hope
We’ve always highlighted our respect and admiration for conversions of shipping containers. And in the past we’ve seen some seriously incredible uses for them – proving just what’s possible when you combine that all-important creativity with roomy ol’ shipping containers.
But often the examples we’ve looked at have been largely commercial ventures, from seafood restaurants to markets to snazzy offices along the Regent’s Canal. But today we bring you news of what is possibly the most admirable conversion we’ve seen yet.
Take a trip over to Michigan’s most famous city, Detroit – as you’re undoubtedly wont to do – and you’ll discover a splendid initiative to ease the city’s burgeoning housing crisis. With around 40,000 vacant houses set to be demolished, it was only a matter of time before some savvy sort came upwith a novel solution. And the answer lies within a shipping container.
Currently the 40ft container is being constructed at a General Motors plant more used to seeing the famed Chevrolet automobiles rolling off its production lines. Once it’s totally completed, duck inside the container home and you’ll find a pretty amazing 320 square feet of space fit to live in – with room for two bedrooms, a kitchen and a bathroom.
A spokesman for General Motors, David Darovitz, said: ‘I loved the creative idea of taking and reusing an old shipping container and giving new life. It can be used as a model for a bigger idea.’
It’s hoped that that bigger idea will be to use persuade others that this concept could ease the crisis affecting thousands of Detroit citizens. When the container is finished, it’ll be shipped off to the Michigan Urban Farming Initiative to be used by researchers and university students.
Tyler Gersh, who works for the Michigan Urban Farming Initiative, immediately saw the benefits of the converted container. He stated: ‘It’s scalable, works for everyone, and it’s not going to ruin the environment. It’s easier to maintain and can re-purpose existing materials.’
